 About Taupō Environmental Education Collaborative

We have brought together a range of Taupō environmental education providers so that we can provide better services to schools and our community. Through our collaboration we learn from, support, and build on each others' success, together providing better environmental education for students of all ages across the Taupō District.

Our purpose

​With respect to fostering environmental, sustainability and wellbeing outcomes within our rohe, we aim to:

  • COLLABORATE amongst local organisations for effective mahi;

  • CONNECT to real life educational opportunities;

  • EMPOWER students, teachers and communities; and 

  • DEVELOP rangatahi to be kaitiaki/stewards and decision makers.

Kiwi Contact

  • A partnership between Kiwis for Kiwi, Contact Energy and Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary, run in conjunction with Kids Greening Taupō with support from the Department of Conservation

  • Working exclusively with Kids Greening Taupō schools providing unique experiences linked to the Save the Kiwi kōhanga kiwi crèche and kiwi egg incubation facility at Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary


Predator Free Taupō

  • Learn about predators that threaten our native taonga and how to provide a safe environment for native wildlife to flourish in your own backyard

  • Provides hands-on workshops where students can build their own rat-trap tunnel

Project Tongariro

  • An Environment Hub Aotearoa, and supporting EEC with administration

  • Nature volunteering in the Tūrangi/Tongariro areas

  • Opportunities tailored to schools and seasons

  • Guided hīkoi and history of Rotopounamu

  • Through effective collaboration across all levels, Project Tongarirō is a key facilitator ensuring local councils, Department of Conservation, Iwi, landowners, businesses, schools, and individuals are inspired to connect with nature, advocating for, and working to strengths to achieve community-driven conservation outcomes.

Tongariro National Trout Centre

  • Freshwater education: water quality, native fish (ika), trout, freshwater invertebrate discovery. Treasure hunts highlights observation skills.  

  • Interpreted tours of Freshwater Aquarium, Museum, and Tongariro National Trout Centre including feeding wild trout.

  • Catch a fish in our pond! Learn to fly fish with skilled anglers, fish guaranteed. Catch and release options available

  • Hire a cycle and ride the River Trail

  • Sausage sizzle lunches by request.
