Join us for a Heritage Walk and Talk as we meander along the Old Coach Road, one of NZ’s most significant examples of roading engineering from a by-gone era when roads were built by hand.
The Old Coach Road was once ‘bridged the gap’ between the railways construction heads; one coming south from Auckland and the other north from Wellington. As the railway neared the Central North Island the ‘gap’ was coached. Passengers were transferred onto a horse drawn coach and travelled along the Coach Road before reembarking their train and carrying onwards.
There is plenty for history buffs, botanists and railway enthusiasts to look at. Much of the old road features the original ‘setts’ or cobbles still in place, we get up close to three historical viaducts, and one still operation – we may even see a train go by. We also get to peep into a beautifully constructed curved tunnel once part of the Main Trunk Line. Our route also features a variety of scenery, from regenerating bush to old podocarp forest, on a clear day there are sweeping views of the Waimarino as we travel along the southern edges of Tongariro National Park beside forest featuring giant rata trees.

Check, Clean, Dry to stop the spread
Getting outdoors is a fantastic way to explore New Zealand, but it’s important to check, clean, and dry your gear to protect our natural environment. Check your boots, clothing, gear and equipment for weeds, seeds and pests, and clean thoroughly after each trip to prevent the spread of invasive species.
