The Waipakihi River Heli-Hike offers a rare opportunity to experience one of the most spectacular valleys in the Kaimanawa Ranges from a completely new perspective.
To showcase the conservation efforts underway in the Waipakihi River Valley and support adaptive deer management within the neighboring Remote Experience Zone, this Heli-Hike is offered in partnership with Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures (KAA).
Participants will begin the day with a scenic helicopter flight into the Waipakihi before setting out on a guided 7km walk along the developing Ride to Paradise Trail, a purpose-built mountain bike and walking track that follows the river through pristine beech forest and open river terraces.
Following the course of the Waipakihi, you’ll learn how this remote river system supports a rich diversity of native species, including whio (blue duck) and kiwi, and discover how ongoing predator control and adaptive deer management programs are helping to protect and restore the surrounding ecosystem.
Throughout the journey, guides will share insights into the ecological and cultural significance of the Waipakihi River, offering a deeper connection to the landscape and the conservation vision shaping its future.

Check, Clean, Dry to stop the spread
Getting outdoors is a fantastic way to explore New Zealand, but it’s important to check, clean, and dry your gear to protect our environment. Check your boots, clothing, gear and equipment for weeds, seeds and pests, and clean thoroughly after each trip to prevent the spread of invasive species.
