Great Lake Trail - Waihaha to Waihora Bike Ride

An opportunity to experience one of the more remote sections of the Great Lake Trail, featuring towering volcanic cliffs, spectacular views, a hidden waterfall, and a secluded bay.

Be guided by Department of Conservation (DOC) staff and representatives from Bike Taupō as they share insights into the area’s biodiversity, DOC’s partnership with Bike Taupō, and the journey involved in building this remarkable track.

Shuttles will depart from Kinloch, taking riders and their bikes to the Waihaha carpark, the starting point of the Great Lake Trail. From here, the ride follows the Waihaha River for 13 km through tānekaha dominated native bush, offering commanding views across the Waihaha valley. Riders will then continue north on the Waihora Link, travelling through valleys and along dramatic clifftops above the lake. The ride is not technical, but it is graded Grade 3, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. The day concludes with a boat shuttle back to Kinloch, a perfect way to take in the scenery from the water.
