The Tongariro Natural History Society was established in 1984 as a living memorial to four Tongariro National Park staff members. Keith Blumhardt, William Cooper, Derek White and Marie Williams died on Mt Ruapehu whilst testing helicopter rescue equipment on 9th December 1982, along with pilot Douglas McKenzie. Following the tragedy Reeve and Edna Williams and Shirley and Ian White made a substantial bequest to launch the Society and at that time became its founding patrons.
Achievements to date include:
- Publication of several books
- Presentation of scientific research grants through the annual Memorial Award
- Interpretation displays at visitor centres and walking tracks
- Volunteer support for various projects, including revegetation, flora surveys and monitoring, fauna monitoring and track and facility upgrades
- Assisting with the Department of Conservation Summer Programme
- Restoration of the historic Waihohonu Hut
- Financial support for a variety of park projects
