Karen Williams - a bio

It's 25 years since Karen Williams wrote 'Volcanoes of the South Wind, a field guide to the volcanoes and landscapes of Tongariro National Park'. Since 1990 she and husband Dr Harry Keys have spent 20 years living and working in the Taupo district. They have climbed and visited mountains in many parts of the world including Nepal, Alaska, USA, Indonesia and Antarctica.

A journalist and historian, Karen has now written five books about this area including 'Skiing on the Volcano' and 'Ruapehu Erupts'. She also worked with Harry to bring the 1996 version of Ruapehu Erupts up to date. This photo essay now tracks the drama of the 1995/96 eruptions, documents the management challenges, and culminates with the dam break and major lahar of March 2007.

Karen who is the manager of Taupo Museum, has a lifelong love of mountains and is passionate about the work of the Tongariro Natural History Society in the central North Island.

our aims

As a society's we aim to:

  • Promote a wider knowledge and understanding of the flora, fauna, geology, climate and the natural and human history of the Tongariro National Park
  • Promote and publicise research about ecology and natural history generally
  • Publish, sell and distribute information, publications and programmes promoting the objectives of the Society
hands-on conservation

andy in wetlandsThere is no way we would be able to do a fraction of the work we do without our volunteers. Our projects are so successful because we have a dedicated group of local volunteers who we can call on at anytime. However, it would be great to have more!! Anyone who is interested in helping out on short term activities i.e. 1-7 days or so would be very welcome. Give us a call or send us an email to find out what we are up to. If you are driving through Turangi and have some time and energy to give for a worthwhile cause, we would be happy to hear from you. MORE>>>
